Articular cartilages are like shock absorbers. Placed between 2 hard bones, they avoid friction and lesions, which without their presence would be inevitable. They consist of 80% water molecules arranged in a mesh of 15% braided fibers which form the structure and 5% chondrocytes, the active cells of the cartilage.<\/p>\n
Chondrocytes regulate synthesis and destruction within cartilage to maintain healthy tissue. The cartilages are weakly vascularized, which makes their healing difficult. When the joint is put under tension, the water leaves the mesh and the cartilage is thinner. When it returns to rest, the water resumes its place.<\/p>\n
