Otrivine belongs to the group of medications used to treat the symptoms of nasal congestion. It is indicated for adults and children aged 12 years and over. It is used for the short-term treatment (maximum 3 to 5 days) of nasal congestion symptoms in certain conditions such as: common cold (non-allergic rhinitis = inflammation of the nasal mucosa), hay fever, and allergic rhinitis due to, for example, dust and mold, sinusitis (it helps clear secretions), and middle ear infections. As a first-line treatment, rinsing the nose with saline solution is recommended. Otrivine can be used as a second-line treatment. Like all nasal preparations containing a vasoconstrictor, Otrivine cannot be used as maintenance therapy. You should consult your doctor if you do not experience any improvement or if you feel worse after 5 days.
