Constipation is a common functional disorder characterized by decreased stool frequency, difficulty passing stools, and/or a feeling of incomplete bowel movements. It is generally referred to as functional constipation when no underlying organic cause is identified. It can be accompanied by bloating, intestinal discomfort, and impaired digestive comfort, significantly impacting quality of life.
Physiologically, constipation is often linked to a slowing of intestinal transit, resulting from impaired colonic motility. This motility depends on complex interactions between the enteric nervous system, the muscles and contents of the intestine, and the gut microbiota. An imbalance in the gut flora (dysbiosis) can disrupt these mechanisms.
Certain clinical conditions are particularly associated with constipation, such as Constipation-Predominant Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS-C) or disorders related to intestinal microbial overgrowth, notably SIBO IMO (Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth), an increased production of methane in the intestine, which can be associated with slowed transit and decreased intestinal motility.
